Four killed on Carnival float fire in Brazil, the BBC reported on Tuesday.

The tragedy took place in Santos near Sao Paulo. The fire started after the float truck touched a power line causing a short circuit.

That resulted in a blackout to the area and the Carnival event was cancelled.

"This is a tragedy for our city," said the Mayor of Santos, Paulo Alexandre Barbosa told the BBC. "We cannot continue the parade in the current mood. This is a moment of extreme sadness."

The group that sponsored the float was a samba organization called Sangue Jovem (Young Blood). It was organized in large part by fans of Santos Football Club.

The float was tribute to soccer great Pele. He played for the Santos team from the late 1956 to 1974.

Four dead, but children escaped

A group of children were on the float but they were able to get off without being injured. A fire department official told the Associated Press that three of the victims were pushing the float. The fourth victim was a woman spectator who was watching the Carnival parade. Five other people were injured but their conditions are not known at this point.

Santos, the city in Brazil where four were killed on a float today, is South America’s busiest port. Brazil’s largest city, Sao Paulo, is about 55 miles away.

The deaths of four people on a Carnival float fire during Mardi Gras cast a pall of sadness over Brazil during what would normally be the year’s most celebratory time.
