Platts Electric Power Daily; 9/18/12

A problem with the largest DC tie between most of the Texas power grid and those of other regions that is limiting it to 400 MW from 600 MW is on the Southwest Power Pool side of the connection, Electric Reliability Council of Texas spokeswoman Robbie Searcy said Tuesday.

AEP's 600-MW East Direct-Current Tie is one of five DC ties in ERCOT and one of two interconnections between ERCOT and the eastern region. The next largest is the North DC Tie with a capacity of 220 MW.

SPP deferred to AEP as the asset owner for comment, SPP spokesman Pete Hoelscher said. Messages left with AEP seeking additional information were not immediately returned.

The back-to-back high voltage direct current converter was also limited to 400 MW Saturday and Sunday before bouncing back to capacity briefly, according to ERCOT postings. The tie tripped Saturday morning, ERCOT said, adding the cause was unknown at the time.

The converter was unavailable most of Thursday because of a forced outage, ERCOT reported.

The tie is located between the Oncor ERCOT Monticello substation, which is located in the ERCOT region, and the AEP Southwestern Electric Power Welsh substation, which is location in the SPP area.

My question to those that might know is this:

DC ties from my understanding is how you would go from a 60hz system to a 50hz system...do they always use a tie going from a different grid to another, even in North America?

The ties themselves from what is described in that article doesn't seem like it has a whole lot of capacity, 220 mega watts.

What voltages do they use in DC transmission?

High voltage dc transmission has its advantages. Less line loss and reactance losses, unfortunatly the converter costs get kinda pricey. I think the voltages are around 800kv. The inverters change it back to three phase ac power by using thrysistors in what they call a twelve gate or sometimes they call it a twelve valve system to get a three phase sine wave 120 degrees apart at 60 hertz. Convertind the three phase ac to a two rail high voltage dc is all done by diodes set up in a full wave bridge multiplyer. Alot of people dont realize the alternator in your car produces three phase ac thats rectified to about 14 volts dc.

If you really wanted to play with high voltage dc, you can easily build a voltage multiplyer using diods and an ac power source

Yeah if I remember right from SLTC they we're saying its the cost of the inverters and stuff that really racks it up. As far as the line built I'd imagine it'd be cheaper to build....must be a factor of the length of line.

They use DC on railways?

Yep, most subways are dc, usually 600 to 750 volts. In fact almost all trains are diesel electric.
