in Ohio. Multiple contractors. The Ohio PUC demanded First Energy spend some cash and that is exactly what they are doing. Over 200 hands dispatched thru L.U. 71 and probably another 150 plus before it's over. Then L.U.245 is supposed to put on another 250 or so by the end of the month. It's supposed to last till X-mas with rumors of additional work into 2013 for the production leaders. Cheers!

Great Decision By the Ohio PUC. First Energy is known as penny pinching on maintanece and overtime. Over the years they've let their workforce dwindle down to the bare minimum, and now with a aging infrastructure folks are finally getting nervous wondering if the lights will stay on.

This is exactly what happens when your commitment is to the shareholders and your goal is to maximize return on investment rather than providing value and service to your customers .

This is great news for our Union brothers. I'ld love to see more opportunities for the younger apprentices in this project. Transmission and feeder rebuilds are perfect work for the younger guys to develope into outstanding journeymen.

I rode out all the hard days from the early 80's and traveled all around the world just to feed my family in some shit holes unimaginable. The odd time I hit a money job but conditions were not always the best. Dubious to out right dangerous. I wasted knowing that some day the infrastructure would eventually collapse completely not realizing my body's infrastructure would as well.

Problem is, here in Canada anyway, in the 80s 40% of the entire workforce was union and today its 26% and I suspect it is similar in other places. I worked in the UK for a while and worked union as well, but people like Big Clive destroyed the Electrical Union and now whine that there isn't any protection.

Another problem is that many of the IBEW Locals members don't police the collective agreement and I'm sure that is because of the massive amount of wandering linehands that flock to the good money jobs for areas that have terrible benefits and condition or are outright non-union or anti union willing to work RATTY regardless of the collective agreement, and why should they? They couldn't care less about the union or the collective agreement only that they "got mine".

Here in Canada the erosion of conditions is directly related to the "Per Diem" or "Living Out" in paid instead of setting up camps or providing R&B in motel/hotel. The company offers a higher Living Out which is much less expensive than providing R&B and the greed takes over. The hands take the higher LO and then migrate to living conditions far below anything they would accept anytime else just to pocket an extra $25 a day.

At times I so glad I have just about retired out of this industry. Soap Box

This work is 100% IBEW union out of Local 71 my Brother. Right now we just rolled into Baton Rouge after 3 days in Miami on hurricane restoration. The rats are plentiful here. Rumor has it that we'll be going 7-10s when we return to Ohio to ensure the money gets spent in 2012 in Cleveland. Sorry about the way it has all turned out in Canada for ya'll. I've been an IBEW hand for over 33 years and don't put up with much in the way of trading conditions for a better deal for ME. Highplains Drifter knows me and I'm sure he'll vouch for me on that point. Even when I was management, my decisions mostly fell on the side of the men as opposed to corporate profits, much to my employers chagrin. This work can be done by the rules, safely, and a comfortable profit margin for the company if a guy just does his homework and thinks ahead as well as outside the box. It is up to all of us to police each other, as well as ourselves. I have left more than a few jobs over the years by blowing up bridges over issues that needed addressed. I can't remember anyone ever thanking me for making things better for them after I was gone for standing up and saying what needed said, but making me a gone Motherf*****r looking for a job after showing my @ss. Oh well, that's just the way I roll. I haven't been Book 1 anywhere in the United States since 1989. I am the epitome of Book 2 Roadtrash and proud of it. Per Diem makes it possible for a guy to make a little money. It draws the Union Hands, 40 hour work weeks and $90/night motel rooms is what makes all this ratty s**t possible. Sorry per diem killed the trade where you are from, but it is having the opposite effect here from what I see. I'm planning on pulling the pin in 3 years myself, and I can't wait, to tell you the truth, cause ol' Gumbo is tired. Happy Labor Day to all........please remember all our fallen Brothers, and drink a hearty toast in their memory.
