This is a neat little idear; Republic Wireless for $19 a month no commitment - unlimited calls text web, etc. It's a beta program. The idea is if you stay in range of wifi most of them time the phone will use wifi (weefee) to connect the call--if however you are out of wifi it'll use the Sprint network.

Seen it on GeekNews last night. Have to sign up to be a beta tester.

you snoozin' ?? November 2011...........gotta read the dates on these things. I'd a bought one if I'd known about it at the time. Haven't heard anyone shouting from the rooftops about it though. Wonder how the Beta test is going??

Think Nov 2011 was for the 1st wave and now they are introducing the 2nd wave.

I read the whole thing and didn't see it mentioned. Clicked on the "start here" button and nothing happened. They only mentioned the one phone running Android program as well. I'll have to do some more research, see if there is a feedback page from users or something along those lines.

Why should any one company provide a App to connect to yours and other peoples networks and exclusively charge you $19 mo?...
Do you think any particular company has this right?..or the right to access your bandwidth?

Is the City going to be 'one big wi-fi' signal' where its a FREE FOR ALL to use?
How does this work if you travel out of a wi-fi zone ?
What will other Cellular companies do to lower their billing or pricing to remain competitive to this?
Is REAL 3/4G Coverage the best alternative still...what are the best plans avail right now?

Will this mean thousands of people will be searching for...or possibly hacking to any wi-fi signal they can connect to?

How will your internet security be upgraded to prevent any 'FREE Wi-FI' Bandwith lost due to unauthorized users trying to connect to your data point?.
Is your own IP & network secure, and your information protected from a open network to access at ANY Time???

Will any cyber crimes be transmitted through your IP if its left unprotected?

Haven't been in San Francisco since about 2004--there must be enough weefee signal there to go head to head with an xray machine walking down the street.

I'm not a fan of public wifi there is no telling who or what is filtering through your data. If it's a must a VPN connection would be the way to go. Had a neighbor one night a few years ago where I noticed my router blinking like crazy and I knew all my gear was turned off.

Sure enough did some looking and found em taking advantage of the open weefee network. Shut em down. $20 a month go buy your own. $9 and change here for DSL.

Sure there is all kinds of WiFi in the City, I need a phone I can rely on in the most rural parts of this country…so that style of phone does not get my interests aroused.

Naw it's not for your lifestyle.

Now from my US travels I've done in the past pretty much hands down Verizon/ATT is going to work best out in the open range. Where one doesn't work the other will.

Now in some specific regions you might have problems with some of them and that is where a regional carrier will fill in the gaps--some like US Cellular but with that you'll probably be committed to a contract.

Best option for a nomad like you might just be installing a repeater in your vehicle to give you an extended range.
