Michigan utility lineman hit, killed by car on road

BLADE STAFF

JONESVILLE, Mich. -- A utility lineman was killed on a Hillsdale County roadway Friday when he was struck by a car while preparing to assess damage to a power line caused by a downed tree limb, authorities said.

Jeffery Henry Creel, 56, of Reading, Mich., died Friday morning in Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center after being flown there from the accident scene in Fayette Township.

Mr. Creel was on the job for Consumers Energy and was walking along Homer Road, north of Ball Road, behind the utility truck when he was struck by a passing car and dragged for a short distance before being dislodged, Dr. Diane Barnett, a deputy Lucas County coroner, said. He died of multiple blunt-force injuries to his pelvis and lower extremities, she said.

The car was driven by a Jonesville resident, according to Michigan State Police, who did not immediately release the driver's name or say if there were charges
