Re-insulating old Hoover line
Here is the job I am currently working line just outside of Kingman. It's on hwy 93 heading to Hoover Dam.
The line was built in 1938 to supply power for work at hoover. Most of the poles are original Cedars.
Don't ask me why we are not changing out the poles! Looking at the pictures I know that you will wonder, why not?
Surprisingly the poles are still solid about an inch into the wood.
Oh yeah, the line has been switched out incase you were wondering.
Lot's to go! There's about 60 miles to the dam.

You know they will replace with steel poles, I doubt of there is much stress with wind…….what is the conductor size, #2Cu?.

Got a heart of gold, and whatever they treated those butts with, good stuff, that looks like a dry area, they will last another 50 yrs.

It's 1/0 copper, with 3/8 static.
I think they are changing out insulators to give the affect of line improvement for our tie to Hoover that has created problems with outages for the dam.
Your right John, those cedars are reliable as hell in the desert. They don't like lightning though, go up like a match stick!
When we do replace, the old cedars are snagged up by the guys for fire wood before they hit the scrap pile!

The man that was my Journeyman when I topped out loves those old cedars, but he wants ones that are 36” circumference. He has a saw mill and has built his deck and house fence from old cedars. In 07 I was around 70 miles from his home and I hauled him two semi loads off poles……and on company time too!!!! Plus my crew got a sit down lunch that day!

The Timbers are cedar also
The old timbers we are removing are cedar also, I snagged some of them for a patio I will be building.
The timbers that have been replaced in the past are in worse shape than the original timbers!
Wood peckers love the douglas fur (I think) that were used to replace them!

You are right......
They do go up like a match stick, as far as fire wood, the wood burns fast and hot, but spitting them make great fence posts. Short side note, if you smoke, don't put your butts out on them, A JL did that once, drove off when the work was finished, a little stoke, and the pole top caught on fire, had to replace the whole stick.....
Old cedars are tough, When unloading frost, I have seen them twist and bend like they were rubber.......
