Testing for Duke

Post  aviewfrom on Tue Mar 27, 2012 9:15 pm

I've passed the CAST test for Duke and have the physical test here in a couple weeks. They sent guidelines for this test letting us know what we're going to be doing but I was wondering if anyone here has been through it before.

And Hi, looks like I found where everyone took off to from that other site.

I'm gonna ask around and try and get some answers for you... I'm a little foggy on it cause at my company the test was kinda lame 25 years ago. I'm sure today they have a certified occupational health profesional administering the test.
I'm sure there gonna test your balance and strength. Without a doubt your blood preasure, listen to your Heart-beat and lungs , a drug and achohol screening, Maybe test for sugar in the urine. maybe a quick Physical... Hernia check... I even had a finger up the butt deal Evil or Very Mad

I'll see if I can find out anything about Duke thats more current.

I was talking about the physical abilities test, haha. Where we are scored on how well do can do certain things related to linework, like bore a hole in a pole or use an extension ladder. I hope hey don't ask for a prostate exam then. Might make for an uncomfortable time sitting for the interviews.

Ok I asked around and couldn't find anyone who took the Physical abilities test for Duke.
I did however hear about some of the testing for other utilities;

first one. started off with stretching. there was a side shuffle test. a pull test on a machine and a rowing (hands) test. there may have been one other one. they give you very specific directions. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS! or you will fail. give it your all and do not give up.

second one. again FOLLOW DIRECTIONS! climb a 30ft pole (pole steps) 3 times up and down w/o stopping and the last time go to the top and belt off. while there reach out as far as you can to one side and then go to the other side and do the same. then come down. you dont need to be fast. breathe properly so as to not run out of gas. open up your belt to reach out far. they notice everything and watch like a hawk.

Maybe Drill a hole in a pole with a brace and bit. Its alot harder than it looks, an trust me we don't even use a brace and bit anymore. I've personally thrown every last one of those stupid contraptions in the trash!

unload and reload a bunch of 10' crossarms off a truck rack. use proper form when lifting and 3 points when getting on/off truck.

set up a collapsible ladder onto a pole

run a handine, send up a crossarm to the top of a 45' . i make sure to communicate (coming up, at your feet, ect.) as if you are sending it up to someone that was actually up there. use full use of each arm on the strokes going up and down. all in control.

Like I said this was at another utility so It may not be what Duke does. Dress for work, work boots, Long sleeve shirt, if you have a nice pair of work gloves that are broken in allready, I'ld bring em..... sometimes a brand new pair you lose a little dextarity.

Listen very carefully.... Part of the test that is hidden to you is how well you follow direction. You have to relax and don't tense up! I know your gonna be nervous but try and calm your nerves.... Remember to breath.

Just thought of something.... If other applicants are taking the test at the same time, Its always better not to go first. Don't say a word, but take it all in, study every move carefully. Learn from them.

If they keep you guys seperate you'll have to wing it. One trick that I use everyday even after all these years is; Mental visualization

Before I do even the most simple task I try and visualize each step in the task, sort of like mental practice. wheather its a trouble call, Building a bank, Running primary, or a routine service order, I try and visualize the task in my head first.

Thanks for the reply Smile I made it this far in the hiring process, but fingers crossed. There were quite a few people called in to test for the apprentice positions. About 150 took the CAST test and even though I imagine there were some who didn't pass there are most likely still quite a few in the running.
